First licensed in 1503, this handsome timbered and thatched pub is Hampshire's oldest (and apparently began life in 1147 as a workshop and residence for the craftsmen constructing St Michael`s church opposite). The most characterful part is the heavy-beamed and panelled front bar with high-backed traditional settles and elm tables, and an ancient inglenook fireplace with a frieze of burnished threepenny bits set into its mantlebeam; the lounge and dining room are no smoking. The garden is pretty in summer and the pub is popular with walkers and riders as it is fairly close to the extensive Queen Elizabeth Country Park, and about half a mile from an Iron Age farm and settlement.
