Tastefully decorated 'quiet' 17th Century hotel (ie: no Music or TV whatsoever, only children over the age of 5 allowed and no pets) It has parts dating back to the 13th Century, and has original exposed timber beams that exude historical charm and atmosphere.

It is reputed that Oliver Cromwell stayed at the Inn whilst the Roundheads besieged nearby Hay Castle. The first room has an oak timbered bar, with comfy armchairs to relax in; and the theme of 'scrubbed pine' tables carries on throughout. The Dining Room overlooks the garden terrace where herbs are grown for use in their own kitchens. The menu board is wide and varied. An outlet for Wye Valley 'seasonal' Beers plus a Wye Valley brewed 'House Beer' called 'Old Black Lion Ale' at 4.5% abv. Both Real Ales are kept and served in tip-top condition. The hotel offers accommodation in the shape of 10 quality en-suite rooms all of which are non-smoking. This place has featured in the Michelin Guide and 'Which?' Hotel Guide, and has 2 AA stars and 1 Rosette for Cuisine, 2 RAC stars plus 2 Dining Awards for Excellence, and has two stars and a 'Highly Commended' from the Welsh Tourist Board.
